Pinterest When to Share and Not!

A colleague and friend Janice from mostlyblogging.com recently asked me whom had a Reader asked a few questions pertaining to Copyrights. So, here we go.

Question 1:
(“Is it a violation to share music videos?”)
I will assume this would pertain to YouTube music videos, it depends, if a person shares a music video to Facebook or Twitter it houses the link to the original source that it was obtained from, as bloggers we like this for a few reasons, generate more traffic, gain more subscribers and so on.
When is not ok to use the music video. Simply put, if a person were to download the video then upload the content to their YouTube channel then this is referred to as stealing.

Question 2:
(“Old photos I find at yard sales/flea markets. I have no idea who the people in the photos are, and the pictures were for sale, so is it okay to post some of these photos?”)
To the best of my knowledge this should be fine to share on Facebook, personal blog, I would probably make some sort of statement about the photos in question like, Found these lovely old photos from the 1900’s while at an Estate Sale. Besides, most of us have seen old photos as well as very old photo albums selling on EBay and other sites. The original owners either through them out, Landlords or Apartment managers through them out which in most cases -considered as abandoned property.

Question 3:
(“Pinterest. I thought it was for finding photos, etc. to put on your own board, but have heard that you can be sued for doing this. How can Pinterest stay in business if everyone posts photos from everywhere onto their boards. Is this wrong? I’m scared to use it any more!”)
This one is a bit tricky especially when it comes to the wording within their Policies. There are some concerns, now, if the item in question is your own work then you still hold the copyright. Fine and dandy right, there is a caveat within their policies. I will provide an excerpt from their Policy page.

b. How Pinterest and other users can use your content
You grant Pinterest and our users a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide license to use, store, display, reproduce, save, modify, create derivative works, perform, and distribute your User Content on Pinterest solely for the purposes of operating, developing, providing, and using the Pinterest Products. Nothing in these Terms shall restrict other legal rights Pinterest may have to User Content, for example under other licenses. We reserve the right to remove or modify User Content for any reason, including User Content that we believe violates these Terms or our policies.
More simply put
Copies of content shared with others may remain even after you delete the content from your account.
c. How long we keep your content
Following termination or deactivation of your account, or if you remove any User Content from Pinterest, we may retain your User Content for a commercially reasonable period of time for backup, archival, or audit purposes. Furthermore, Pinterest and its users may retain and continue to use, store, display, reproduce, re-pin, modify, create derivative works, perform, and distribute any of your User Content that other users have stored or shared through Pinterest.

For most of us, the main concern comes from the part that Pinterest and other users could modify and create deviated works from it. So keep this in mind if you pin your own material.
A good rule of thumb to use when pining a pin, especially if the work comes from a Photographer, if you are not sure- then do not.

There are over 3.18 billon humans on our planet and with out the proper targeting systems in place, I would fail. Different ages, likes, dislikes, you get the point.

 

 

So, pops is working on some videos, and we just wanted to let you know that he is still around and thinking of you.

I will add you humans have it rough, pops had to cough up close to $200.00 for rotors and pads yesterday. Glad I got wings!

 

Patients -A Requirement! What Are Your Thoughts?

This morning, I set out to capture birds in midflight capturing those wonderful movements. After several failed attempts, I believe I finally have one that is acceptable.

Most mornings, I would grab Joe and head out to the patio, then moments later birds would appear flying around, playing/fighting in mid flight and this one bird would always perch itself on a tree limb near me. As soon as I would go inside to grab my camera, the bird would be gone. Other mornings, I would pretend to go inside, patio door noise open and close while the bird would just stay perched. I would bang Joe on the metal of the BBQ and nothing, no movement only to look down at me as though it were mocking me.

I was determined, this morning for some reason and this time besides my companion Joe,  sexy Carmelita joined Joe and I. However, after a while, I soon realized I would have to abandon my faithful companion Joe that has always been there every morning. I turned my hat around, grabbed Carmelita by the hand and ventured out. I fondled Carmelita buttons manually. We walked closer and closer but not too close. I kneeled on one knee as though I were going to propose while Carmelita’s eyes extended to the max.

There was silence as though it was just the two of us, we waited patiently for the right moment, thirty minutes went by then the magic started.

VIP – MEGADEATH -Death Ears

Last night, Deb gets a call from her Nephew needing a ride to a from the Badlands where MEGADEATH is playing in Sioux Falls, SD. She and we often do this to avoid drunk driving. After picking Matt and his fiancée up, along the way, Matt asked if we want to go?

Of course we said yes! Free VIP tickets! I added the price chart for the tickets that were being sold on the Badlands Website.

 

I will admit, Heavy Metal to the point that I can not understand one word their singing is not for me. Yet, on the other hand I can say, I have seen them in person before the lead singer David or I die.

Besides the private restrooms, having a server come to you to take your orders, did have it’s benefits especially once some were Moshing in the general area below. While a couple others were escorted out of the building. After the first half hour, they had a major sound technical issues which caused a delay for a good 20-30  minutes, at first I was wondering if there might had been a threat of some sort, the way they rushed off stage. Now, if I had the resources and chose to pay the $4,500.00 for the VIP suite, I believe I would have been cursing up a storm and with no encore. Once the drummer throw the last drum stick out to the audience, one of Matts’ friends whom was in the general area showed a broken piece of the drum stick that he was able to hang onto.

Although, the night had it’s ups and downs, I did get to see Chuck Brennan the owner of the Badlands and the Rock & Roll Academy for Boy’s and Girls ant lately became owner of a sprint car race track. I also shook hands with Tom the General & VP of the Sprint car race coordinator. if I got the title correct.

Before we get our hands dirty, Self-hosted sites can be intimidating especially when having to enter a piece of code to make certain wonders work.

I searched hi and low for this one. I read in WorPress forums where and Engineer commented that they decided to eliminate the access to StumbleUpon Sharing button due to that many WorPress users are using and or have been converted to the Https URL format from Http. First some facts, did you know that Ebay owned StumbleUpon at one time. I just found that this minute.

StumbleUpon was owned by eBay from May 2007, when it was acquired for $75 million until April 2009, when Garrett Camp, Geoff Smith and several investors bought it back. StumbleUpon is now an independent, investor-backed startup once again, with offices in San Francisco and New York City.

Last night I ran across a Blog that had a StumbleUpon button on their Blog so that people could share their work if that wanted to do so.

I was like how is that possible, WordPress got rid of that. So research I did. Then I ran across Debby Gies’s Google Plus Page where she shared an article about “The Power of StumbleUpon” which I read, then I was like SOB! So there I am at my desk just shaking my head.

So, if you would like to put a StumbleUpon button on your Blog, then follow these simple steps.

Go to your Dashboard,

Then settings

Then click on Sharing.

 

 

 

Locate

Add a new Service

When you click on “Add a new service”

A new popup window will open

 

 

 

 

 

 

Service Name: Enter Stumble Me (if feeling like a smart butt)

Sharing URL: Copy the below URL and paste it in this field:

https://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=%post_full_url%

Icon URL:  Sue Coletta in her article stated that this was the harder part. So I will make it easy for you.  To the left is a 16 x 16 pix png image. Download it and then put into your Media library. Once it is in your Media Library, copy the URL for the image and past it in the Icon URL field. Once all information has been entered, click on “Create Share button.
