I Almost Died Last Night!

Complacent

We hear the stories of nature’s wrath inflicting destruction to many far and close. As we watch or hear news of devastating events, some of us feel sorrow and send our virtual prayers via social media or silent litanies to ourselves. The inflicted we view as people, we feel bad for those that lived or died from nature’s wrath. Still we do not know these people; they are not family or close friends that we cherish, although we may feel bad for these unfortunate ones they are not in hearts as those that are close to us.

August 27th, 2015 Sioux Falls, SD

6:15 PM CST, The rain is heavy with slight hydroplaning on the North I-29. I arrive at 6:30 to pick Deb up from work, I hear the words of wanting to go to Hy-Vee (a local grocery store), and so off we go. We decided to eat some Chinese there for dinner and as we ate this pile of garbage from hell that neither one of us could finish; we get a notification on the smartphones, “Sever Flash Floods in your area”.

I have heard many of blah-blah in your area take shelter now or stay in doors to only see nothing occurring here. News anchors warning to stay in doors for sever freezing temperatures, now this one I believed for when you did try to step outside that wind chill hitting your face at -40 degrees and numbing your face, taking your breath away makes you a believer, although employers do not feel the same. You brave the freezing temperatures that you were waned about.

Once at Wells Fargo, the tornado sirens went off and escorted to the bathrooms for shelter. The security guards nervous as hell almost shitting his pants from his fright, then I hear over his radio the winds were only five miles per hour in our area. Seriously, five miles per hour!

While Deb is pondering routes to take in her head, we did the shopping she had set out to do. No Angus steaks left -frown face appears. As we finish the shopping, we hear the rain loud and strong like a monsoon. We proceed to the checkout counter and were asked if we wanted drive up service, the clerk told us that others were doing the same due to the rain. We agreed.

We get to the outer doors of the store and see it is coming down hard and true. I go out and get the car. I am soaked along my backside. Me not happy! I drive close to those outer store doors and collect Deb and proceed to the drive up area. Under the metal canopy we exchange seats; the person loads the bought items in the back seat. We’re off.

Then all of a sudden out of nowhere mad gushes of nature’s wrath pour in like a fierce running river, nowhere to go. We managed to wade ourselves through most of it, but then other careless drivers in a hurry pass us, splashing water over the roof of the car. We feel the car wobbling back and forth, wondering if it might tip over. One last Street maps4×4 standing tall rushes pass us, the engine dies. We are stuck in the middle of the intersection of South Larch Ave, between 41st St. and 44th. We only had twenty to thirty steps if by foot to reach 44th St. The water is getting higher now covering the entire wheels, Deb calls AARP for her roadside assistance as they read their script like so many companies have today, Deb explains, she is disabled and an amputee -she was told to hang up and call 911 and that they would call local authorizes since we were trapped in a raging pool of fear. The outburst cries of heaven is coming down even harder now, the wind is picking up too. The hard pounding force, in and out, back and forth, the water is now inside filling the floorboard. My feet and angles are in cold water now. The force on the door would not let me open it. No escape.

A slight calm has come, sending two female angels Mother and daughter I believe that offered to push the car to dry land. Then a freaking dumb ass MO-FO in a van decides to make a mad dash in front of us in hopes to get to his destination. Now, he is stuck, now what! Angles dispatched yet delayed due to an impatient careless SOB! Thankfully he managed to get himself unstuck and backed out the way he came. After all he was going against the current.  We are now on solid dry land and the angels were thanked by another careless driver showering the two women as they sped by. The older woman made a sound as that ice cold water hit her backside and head.

The local authorities that finally appeared were three young kids, two males and one female from Burger King. No joke!

Since living here for eight years now, I have become complacent disregarding warnings, the notifications via the smartphone to take heed. I must change that!

  1. Flash floods are so dangerous and around the world they are escalating .. I am pleased you escaped unharmed Michael .. Here in the UK we now have reports of many more floods, and several years ago many parts of the UK were submerged under water.. The problem is the amount of volume which now falls in such a short space of time with nowhere to go..

many thanks for following my blog.. Wishing you a great weekend
